This Winter … {Personal}

“In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.”

We are in the midst of Winter. And for me… that means ME time! Me time consists of personal projects and road trips. Playing with new camera techniques and family photos. Running… jumping… skipping… singing and capturing the world as it presents itself.
…In other words. Enjoying the downtime in life and documenting it along the way!
‘Me’ time is GREAT!

Personal project number one was a big one. I mean what do you do with thousands of personal photos taken over a 2 year period, a 2 year period that was SO eventful and SO colourful. Photos that deserve to stretch their legs and not being cooped up on a hard drive fighting for elbow space. What do you do?
You make a book!
It took 8 solid days, 8-12 hours a day to make a 204 page photo book. I got my thousands of photos down to 840 that best tell the story of my last 2 years. And it’s the BEST way I could have spent my time! And as this blog post goes on, you’ll be able to see that I am getting ready for the next addition!

Personal photo book blurb

Dare I say ‘onto prettier things’??  …
Meet the girls of my family! My sister and my Mum. The 2 greatest women in the world!
…And did I mention they were pretty?!
(I can expect that I not receive a birthday or Christmas present this year for this! hehe)

Ellis Family Photo

In June I hired my great friend and amazing photographer, Kimberley Cheyne Photography to capture the chaos that is my family.
(Yes, you’ve heard about Kim many times, if you haven’t then this is the time to go check out her work!)

Sisters family portraits

I had the increasing feeling that THIS winter was the time to capture my family and my nephews who are growing up waaaaay to fast! Capture us all before we blink and disperse or worse… grow grey hairs!!!
I have 5 nephews. FIVE! All to my gorgeous sister above! (Yes the one with the pig nose!)
Below is the oldest and the youngest of the team! One knows he’s the shiz, the other thinnnnnks he’s the shiz. I’ll let you figure out which is which! hehe

Nephews and a family photo

I love them with all my heart! And I think secretly when they aren’t beating me up… they might just love me too! :)

Kimberley Cheyne Photography

This is the whole crew!
I tried explaining to Kim how to remember all their names. In order, they make MASTA. Michael, Anthony, Samuel, Troy and Alex. Works well most of the time! …
…Until… as she rightly pointed out that when they are on a beach and running as far away from her as possible and in different directions. MASTA, isn’t going to cut it when trying to tell them apart! lol

Kimberley Cheyne Photography

Annnnnd because Aunty Heather is such a pain in their rear end by asking them to have a photo shoot (two no less) … I let them get their own back! I think the evil little monkeys enjoyed it WAY too much!!!
But loooook at these amazing smiles that I get to treasure forever! Totally worth the rotten cream smell that followed me around for the next couple of days!

A week or two prior to our shoot, accusations started flying that ALL photographers look and dress the same.

I. have. no. idea. what. that. person. was. talking. about! hehe

Road Trip to Dunedin

Have you ever met an Aussie who prefers the cold? … Well now you have!!
MEET AMY!!!
She’s Australian (but don’t hold that against her). She’s the best kind to road trip with. She sings, dances and twirls along side you and she seduces you with her fluency in French! She lives life richly. And I LOVE it!

Kim & Liam {Anytime}

Alright alright. Here goes… I just wrote 2-3 paragraphs worth of rubbish. Something to do with a boggy lawn and it being freezing… I read through it and realised… you, the reader…reallyyyyyy doesn’t care about boggy lawns of all things. And now I bet your wondering why on earth I’ve said ‘boggy lawn’ so many times in this uninteresting opening paragraph… BUT… Stay with me I’m coming to my very simple point.

The very simple point of, I’m sure all you want to see are some beautiful images. …Ok, THAT I can help with. And do you know who can help with making these images even more gorgeous just by stepping foot in front of the lens?…

I introduce to you (not for the first time, nor the last), our movie star like couple…

Off camera flash photography

…Kim and Liam.

Some fun off camera flash work and a couple with love for each other like no other. And this is what can happen.
Did your heart skip a beat too??

Off Camera Flash Portraits Dunedin

I probably should explain the boggy lawn commments before I dive out shouldn’t I?! Well it’s nothing more than … sometimes… you just have to stand on a boggy lawn, in order to get the goods! :)

So this is our side of the results from a weekend with The Huttons. Maybe, if you follow Kim’s work on Facebook or her website (Kimberley Cheyne Photography), you might just find …one of these days…. a few pictures of me, my family, my evil little monkey nephews who I adore so much and them throwing a cream pie or 10 in my face!! Good times.

Thanks for an awesome weekend guys. xx

Campbell Family

Am I the snobby Christchucrcher that has always thought of Dunedin as dreary and wet? (Much the way I thought of England when I was a kid). Well… I apologise for that RIGHT NOW!!! Because last week on my trip to Dunedin to see a friend and meeting the Campbell Family where they took me to a secret possibly not so secret spot not far from Brighton. Well holy moley did my view change on the place.
Epic blue skies, a crazy awesome sand dune to jump off and a family who was all to willing to do so. I am now officially, if only on the border before… in LOVE with Dunners.

Sanae, Mum of 3 boys contacted me not long before my planned trip and said ‘I’d love for you to bring some of our crazy to the photographs’ … you had me at Hello Sanae. :o)

Dunedin Family Photos

Foster, Lauchlan and Magnus are 3 super awesome brothers.

We found out soon enough that Mum jumping in a skirt was just NOT.GOING.TO.WORK! lol

But doesn’t mean the kids can’t do it over and over again! (Even I got a big jump in).

Dunedin Family Photos

They’re a good looking family! …

Hmmm… perhaps not?

They are most certainly a FUN family. Ones who do not sit still! I love it!

Big bro Foster told guns of steel Lauchlan that the way to help a natural smile is to make yourself do a fake laugh. Now Lauchlan just does a butt wiggle and he’s away laughing. lol.

From beginning to end there was smiling, laughing, running, jumping, a little bit of crazy and A LOT of amazing madness! Thank you guys for amazing afternoon. You are a truly awesome family and I hope we get to meet again soon!
